  • This is without a doubt the darkest story I’ve ever read.

I first read it in a Junji Ito manga adaptation before purchasing the original book by Osamu Dazai. After reading, it truly made me think about death and how a person feels so ‘alienate’ that they withdraw from society, as if I had been depressed for the entire week.

The story depicts Yozo, who is incapable of revealing his true self to others and instead maintains a facade of hollow jocularity. His attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a “clown” to mask his alienation, later involved in alcoholism and drug abuse which eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt when he’s an adult.

The only issue I had was with the main character, Yozo.He talks about how frightening people are, doing things solely to satisfy their own emotions, and how scary they are to him, but he is exactly that. Everything he does is motivated by his own emotions. He exploits nice people and justifies it by claiming that humans are animals. While in reality,he is exactly the animal he describes, controlled by his own fear.

(Trigger warning;suic!de) Even though I have a love-hate relationship with the character, the saddest part was learning that the book was heavily inspired by the life of Osamu Dazai. The character Yozo was a ‘self insert character’ that portrays Osamu tragic life. Osamu was suicidal and suffered from mental illness, alcoholism, and drug addiction. He,much like Yozo are detached from society. On June 3rd, 1948, he and his wife eventually committed suic!de which they drowned themselves in the Tamagawa River.

This made me really sympathize with the author, and he is still one of my favorite authors to this day. The book he wrote really portrays a sense of isolation, loneliness, and alienation from society that it always gives me a sense of odd,yet grief whenever I read his book.

  • -Henry Winter(The Secret History)

-He is brilliant and incredibly knowledgeable (yet frequently clueless of current events). He’s cool and remote, and he exudes the ‘aura mystery’.Henry is the most endearing character I’ve ever came across when reading a novel. I love and detest him, am disgusted by him, yet respect him all at the same time.

    -Mistress Mara(A Tale of Witchcraft)

-She is created by Death because he is curious about humans grieving the loss of loved ones.To comprehend this, Death sends his daughter to the earth, and he quickly misses Mara, but Mara adored the joys of living so much that she made certain to escape Death’s hands. Desperate, Death created things like cancer and injury in order for her to return to him.She is a vengeful person who intends to kill everyone out of hatred and revenge. This made me admire her even more for her uniqueness.

    -Regulus Black(Harry Potter)

-He is Sirius Black’s younger brother.a Pureblood.I adore his character development. He went from Death Eater to tragic hero who sacrificed himself to eradicate the Horcrux. This demonstrates both his bravery and selflessness.Despite being a Slytherin, he is bold, chivalrous, and honest. His character,in my opinion, is extremely underrated, underappreciated and deserves more recognition.

  • Osamu Dazai, the fact that his book “no longer human” are heavily influenced with his life are perhaps one of the most dismal things I’ve ever discovered. Osamu was suicidal throughout his life and suffered from tuberculosis, alcoholism and drug addiction. He eventually committed su!c!de by drowning himself at Tamagawa river in 13th June 1948…I remember reading the manga adaptation by Junji Ito and decided to bought the original book, turns out it was the most depressing book I ever read and I’m gone through the whole week feeling depressed.

  • I was finally managed to bought the one of the earlier published of Harry Potter series from a preloved books collection company - oldies but goodies as they say - since I watched the movies alot as a kid,it’s easier to adapt with the storylines so It was faster for me to finished it.It took me less than 15 days to finish all the 7 books. The same situation was when I read A Tale of Magic series by Chris Colfer which I read the sequel from my school library and decided to bought the series and finished it in 5 days.
