Didn’t know it existed. I’m usually less than enthusiastic about film versions of beloved childhood books, though. I don’t like it when my mental images are supplanted by the movie.

Probably Matilda. I first read it when I was 5 and kept reading it periodically all through my childhood and adolescence.
I’m in a book club with some coworkers, and we keep it pretty low-key: we eat some snacks, discuss the book we all (or at least most of us) read, then talk about other books we’re reading, then throw out some suggestions for the next book. Later that week, one of us makes a Google form and we vote on the next book. Some book clubs are much more formal and go into more analysis, though.
I think this episode is great and fairly underrated. It’s structurally complex, has a great framing device with the Girl Croosh article, and of course is funny while still conveying Diane’s not-so-happy feelings.
I love Surprise too! It helps that the first time I saw it, I was super high, but it’s hilarious regardless. Other contenders are Let’s Find Out (especially all the weird screaming) and the big reveal at the end of Free Churro.
Favorite like I’d actually want to hang out with them, or favorite like funniest? The first is Diane, the second is Jessica Biel. I love Underground and how over the top villainous she gets.
There’s a lot of spiraling and more than one other sexual relationship, but it’s definitely not a rinse-and-repeat every season. You’re in for a treat, it gets better and better and ends up at the level of a masterpiece.
