I agree completely, being in a partnership involves give and take throughout different periods of your life. Being the sole breadwinner when it makes sense, or taking on more of the household duties so your spouse can pursue an opportunity is one of the reasons it’s worth getting married! I know tons of people who supported their spouses through grad school or career changes, not to even start on what’s required when you start to think about raising a family together.

  • I know a south Asian woman who dated a guy for a few years who’s dad was pretty racist towards non-south-Asians, so she hid the relationship from him for quite a while.

The plan she came up with, with her mom’s help, was to slow-roll the roll out of the relationship over a few years. Mom knew everything and started planting seeds with dad, talking about love is love, she wants her daughter to be happy etc etc

When dad was finally introduced to the boyfriend he was relieved, given the hints and work that had been put in he thought his daughter was gay.

In these patriarchal cultures sometimes you have to protect yourself, even if it means not doing the things that are “most true” to yourself.

  • Rob in the current season, living in some dudes garage with an outhouse, driving a 20 y/o car that’s held together with duct tape and hope “we’ll just get a surrogate then”. Dude, in Canada it’s illegal to pay for a surrogate, and we have socialized health care. And it’s still usually $20-25k. In the states? A typical hospital birth is out of pocket $25k. Then you’ve gotta pay the surrogate. Then you have the expenses of a newborn.

And yet he’s talking about “even Beyonce and Jay-Z got kids” like dude, they’re rich. And you are very much not rich at all.

It’s amazing the things these people believe.
