Originally I picked up The Algebraist off the “Recommended Sci-Fi” shelf at a Borders bookstore. Couldn’t get into it. Too dry. Let it sit for a couple years. Came back to it to decide whether to sell it or not, started reading it again, and finally got hooked.
After that, I inhaled all of the extant Culture series books and the few other non-Culture sci-fi books he had written. And read all his output right up through the final Culture novel.

Lexx was Canadian TV too, and it was all sex appeal and weirdness.
I picked up a sci-fi book and the first scene was oral sex and it was such a bad start I put the book down before even finishing the chapter.
Yeah, I have the same problem. I don’t use audiobooks. Podcasts once in a while in the car at most.
Either way, you can tell the story is a meld of the two sensibilities. Really great pair up, one of my favorite books.

I can’t imagine a bigger writing motivation than staying ahead of the TV writers before they ruin it.
Now that the worse has already happened, there’s no motivation.
That happens to all popular authors. Their books get thicker and worse because the editors can’t touch them.
I liked the second book better than the first or third, but once the first book finally got going I had trouble putting it down.
Whatever issues I had with the prose I just chalked up to translation. The issues I had with the plot remained issues but didn’t stop me finishing the series or recommending it. A lot of great concepts in here that were executed in an interesting way.
As a kid I collected the Robotech books. Maybe not my first collected set but certainly the longest.
