i have been rewatching the show and i genuinely want to know why people think diane is not a bad person…ofc she has done stuff that in my eyes is wrong, but I want to know why and how does everyone else think it’s otherwise…(no hate)

Well, she has done bad stuff, like everyone else. Everyone in the show has done at least one bad thing. But I think people don’t see her as a bad person because she’s way better than Bojack, and she’s often portrayed as a victim, a victim of Mr. Peanutbutter’s negligence, a victim of her past, a victim of her own depression, a victim of Bojack, of PC’s pressure, of discrimination in general- at least, that’s how I see it. Maybe people will disagree.

I really don’t like this whole victim angle. By this logic Bojack is also a victim, and so is just about everyone in the show. I actually find this take to be kind of misogynistic because you only hear it in relation to the women in the show (Diane, Sarah Lynn, etc) which just robs them of agency. Imo it goes against the show’s entire message. It’s not the bad things that happened to you, it’s you.

Sarah Lynn actually did lack agency being a child actor and facing constant abuse from family and outsiders (see Britney spears). Also, Diane or Sarah Lynn aren’t considered that bad because their actions mostly don’t affect others as much as Bojack’s do. Bojack’s also has a lot of trauma that is explored in the show as well, helping people empathise with him but his self destructive streak actively destroys the lives of others without much consequences for him
