Both songs are used significantly in Ted Lasso and For All Mankind. Kind of takes away (I’m not sure what but something) from the significance. Two different shows and two meanings but why the same songs?

I’m new to For All Mankind and it’s really good so far (just into season 2) but the same songs in major moments confuse me and leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Economies of scale I can go for but the emotional strings can only be pulled so far before they snap.

Edit: Maybe I’m not saying it right. The songs in Ted Lasso are, for me, associated with so much that when they show up in “significant” moments in For All Mankind it was a little bit of a mind fuck. I am well aware that the songs are out there for everyone and everyone can find their meanings. I haven’t looked into what show came first so others could have the same argument. And that makes Apple the asshole.

I have a weenie dog named Bowie.

Glad you brought this up, I was wondering the same thing about the same song in two different Apple movies. Both Coda and Flora and Son use both sides now by Joni Mitchell in critical scenes. Great song of course and very appropriate to each scene, but is it more than just a coincidence?

Apple distributes the show but they don’t make them. Each of the show you mentioned are produced by different companies and they are the ones licensed the songs per the show creators’ request. Each show probably found the song to carry a different meaning for the scene in question.

There are plenty of reasons to get mad at a multibillion dollar company but “song ownership” like the way you mentioned is not one of them.

I know precisely how you feel. I had watched - actually, rewatched - Guardians of the Galaxy 2 not long before I saw the last episode of Ted Lasso, and I felt so cheated out of what should have been a very emotional (manipulative, sure, buy still) moment because I sat on the sofa going, okay, I JUST heard this song in something else I watched. And then I was both disappointed and distracted.

Father and Son, in case anybody’s wondering.

For me a good or bad song choice just depends on the context. If the song worked for both shows in both scenes, then great. If not, the music team needs to step it up. At this scale of money it’s not likely that it was cheaper to use those songs over others.

The best is when a song like “Never Gonna Give You Up” shows up at a funeral and you’re crying because it just makes sense there.

Thanks for all the insight! I genuinely enjoy both songs they are just combining into one emotional mess that I’m finding harder to separate because I watch too much TV. I’ve had a long weekend with a head cold and a computer.

man, i get where you’re coming from, but these songs are out there for everyone. they can hold different meanings for different people. plus, gatekeeping which show can use them is just not cool. let’s appreciate the power of music in different contexts without getting too caught up in ownership.

Three little birds is sung by Ajax supporters at the start of every match in the Johan Cruyff Arena, so I think that’s why it’s featured in Sunflowers?
