I have seen so many posts of people shitting on popular books so I need to hear some of your favourite ones.

For me I believe that the A Good Girls Guide To Murder series is amazing and deserves all the love in the world

It has a incredible plot with so many fun and well written characters that I found quite relatable, the entire series is just fantastic and is one of my all time favourite mystery series

All of Bujold is amazing. Her World of Five Gods has got to be one of the best examples of religion in fantasy ever.

Yes. It’s not a surprise that when the Hugo’s created a category for Best Series in 2017, The Vorkosigan Saga won. And then the very next year, she won again with World of the Five Gods. Her books really are that good.

I was a bit younger and it was my first ‘adult’ book in school after graduating from the learning books.

I still haven’t read the whole series though…

My daughter is 6, almost 7. From the moment we knew we were expecting a baby I have been waiting for the night to crack open our hardcover of book 1. I think I’m still a few years away from her being able to really get into it… but I’m so close and I’m so excited.

I absolutely love the Murderbot series by Martha Wells. Every book is better than the last. I’m hooked.

100% agree. I read it for a book challenge and now I cannot stop. It was sneaky. At first I though, I guess it won’t hurt to do one more - it’s short. And now I am hanging on every word!

I’m crazy about the Zoey Ashe series. Very great mix of dark comedy, cyberpunk and social commentary about how women are treated in online spaces, among other things. Will Blackwater is one of my all-time favorite characters.

Man, that series ruined me. I blazed through the first four. I remember finding two of them on clearance even. Ended up having to wait for each subsequent book and was never disappointed. No other book has filled that gap for me since.

James SA Corey which is a pen name for Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The series was originally pitched as a custom DnD universe. Cool stuff.

I wish I liked it. I couldn’t even finish the first book, which was a huge bummer, considering how much everyone seems to love it. I was prepared for it to be a new favorite, but it was just… lame

You are not alone. I thought the first book was awful. I made it through, but only because the other book I was reading at the time was worse. Between “vomit zombies”, horrible physics, juvenile humor once the protagonist gets a girl friend, and the entire plot based on how the crew always makes the right decision (everyone else being wrong and being convicted to help them), I was just happy to be done with it.

omg i actually love the expanse but i also feel like i’m decently versed in physics and that the expanse does it much better than a lot of the other sci-fi i’ve read. mind if i ask what about that you didn’t like?

Basically the plan to crash an asteroid into the sun was just plain dumb and everyone went along with it. The was nothing reality based about the physics of that one. And, plot-wise, the whole plan was completely unnecessary.

Yes. Everything by Arthur Conan Doyle, but what’s awesome is Sherlock Holmes is in public domain and the amount of adaptations/spin-offs, or original stories with the characters is probably infinite and it is hit and miss with books but makes finding something that gives me the same excitement as the original author I get so stoked. I’ve read everything by the original author and pick up random interpretations from time to time.

The Farseer Trilogy is as good as people say it is. I won’t say too much more because you should just read it.

So is the Black Company, although it’s only about 75% as gritty and tripy as it’s rep.

The First Law Trilogy is great, wonderful character development, but the ending will make you want to spit fire and chew nails.

The Dresden Files are fun and sometimes hilarious. Dresden is a pulp noir hero by design, though, which has gotten some flak recently. YMMV but I don’t know what folks were expecting from a book that screams it’s love for that old genre from the rooftops.

I just realized you meant the Robin Hobb Farseer. I was thinking of Robert J Sawyer’s Farseer / Quintaglio trilogy about talking dinosaurs doing the Galileo Affair, which is also awesome.

Dresden would be more forgivable if fans did not constantly say there are no issues. Most series have issues. The fact that fans claim all issues are fixed after book 4 is wrong. The most honest answer is Dresden is Dresden if he bugs you bail. If the writing bugs you it does get a bit better.

Weird none of the people I know who like Dresden think there are no issues. We’ve got a running inside joke that Harry would suddenly stop in the middle of a big bad fight to explain how his magic interferes with electricity and his car an old blue Volkswagen known as the blue beetle. Full agreement that Dresden is a Mary Sue author insert (with the usually accompaniment of undue attention from any woman he encounters) and that the big climax felt less climactic than most of the individual books.

It’s just really fun (from when the writing becomes bearable) despite the many issues.

The Realm of the Elderlings deserves all of the love. I say that despite the story ripping my heart out, shredding it, and putting it back together. Several times.

Sell me on the Far Seer trilogy. All my friends love Robin Hobb and have recommended her and I read a ton of fantasy (it’s the main genre that I love) so it should be right in my wheelhouse. Despite that, I read Assassin’s Apprentice and it didn’t really hit for me and, subsequently, the second book continues to slip behind other books on my TBR.

Don’t think anyone should have to “sell” you on it. If you don’t want to continue, don’t continue. If you want to figure out whether or not you should continue perhaps provide more info on why you didn’t like it. Was it because Fitz’s pov was a child’s pov? If so, the series spans nearly his entire life. Did you find it too slow? If so, it might not be a good fit for you. Did you find Fitz annoying? If so, then, again, it might not be a good fit for you, since you need to enjoy being in Fitz’s head to enjoy the series. I’m very much a fan of the series and Fitz is my favourite character, but the series just isn’t a good fit for some readers.
