Could be the book you loved the most, the series you daydreamed about, book that inspired you, fascinated you, your comfort read…anything.
And why.
I LOVED the Anne McCaffrey Pern books. I would walk around daydreaming about new adventures set in the books’ world. The Dragonsong books really connected my love of music with my love of fantasy (and animals).
- {{Summer of the Monkeys}} was absolute favorite. As a lonely kid in SE Oklahoma who was close with my grandpa, it was almost like a fantasy autobiography.
- Probably read the entire Series of Unfortunate Events 3-4 times through - Really sucks they never managed to get it right on TV/film
- My Side of the Mountain - Jean Craighead George
- “Wings” by Bill Britain. Changed my life.
- The Tintin series started me reading graphic novels. From them I got my love of action stories. Then I graduated to Yoko Tsuno. I got my love of sci-fi from her. - My favorite book series was Fantômette. - The latter two featured strong (but not bitchy) female characters. They refined my own brand of feminism.
- For me it was Hatchet. Grew up hiking, hunting, fishing…anything out in the woods. Loved the story and thinking about how I’d approach the same situations.
- Amazing Spiderman
- For some reason, this book always stayed with me and every once in a while I’ll read it again: “The Wicked Pigeon Ladies in the Gardenl by Mary Chase. Not really saying it meant the most, but it’s weird how some books stay with you.
- “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress “ set my views on a lot of things. I read it when I was about 12.
- Island of the blue dolphin. I grew up in coastal California and would see the islands out on the water and daydream about all the adventures I would have out in the wilderness.
- Junie B Jones. I loved how she was just herself, as I never felt able to be.
- The Neverending Story. I was a reader already but after responding positively to the film, my grandma helped me get a copy of the book. I was amazed. That book cemented my love of stories and fantasy in particular. It’s still one of the best and most poignant fantasy books I’ve ever read. I cry every time I read it. I read it dozens of times growing up.
- Winds in the willow - Anne of Green Gables.
- Siddartha by Herman Hesse.
- The Velveteen Rabbit. Makes my heart so full. And I cry every time I read it.
