Just found out that the editor in chief of The New Yorker, David Remnick, and Bill Maher are childhood friends. It is stated that “He attended Yavneh Academy in Paramus.[6] Remnick was also a childhood friend of comedian Bill Maher.[7]”
We all know that editor have the power to alter articles to fit their direction.
Do you guys think the hit piece on Hasan Minhaj was orchestrated by Bill Maher’s team. I know he and Hasan already had beef due to criticism Hasan made about Bill regarding his takes on Muslim issues. And Bill probably does not want him as the host of the Daily Show or as competition. Ever since John left, Bill’s show over took the market and now Hasan would have presented a serious threat.
Interesting twist. I also noted that the writer of the New Yorker piece has written puff pieces for Candice Owens (and weirdly didn’t fact check her lies) and the CEO for Warner.
Not sure if Maher had a specific ask for it, but he had a clip on his recent episode about it and basically dragged Minhaj.
So it clearly must have stuck with him. Additionally Maher’s show has shifted right quite a bit.
the writer of the New Yorker piece has written puff pieces for Candice Owens
So OP’s bit about the friendship and connection there doesn’t do much for me. I could see there being a connection but it isn’t definitive nor damning to me. However… this is a bit concerning. A lot concerning. Very concerning.
Wait Claire Malone did puff pieces for Candace? Is there a link
Normally I would say this is sounding like a conspiracy theory, but he’s a brown Muslim man who spoke out about things a lot of people would rather keep quiet, so it wouldn’t surprise me
Lol. Literally no different than any old conspiracy but because it ‘feels’ true to you… god help us.
A few weeks ago Bill Maher mentioned in his opening monologue on his show that Hasan was exposed for making stuff up, then he bitched about how Hasan said Bill Maher said certain inflammatory things that he apparently hadn’t.
That was after the New Yorker story had published.
Yes, it was after. I have no idea if Bill Maher encouraged the story; it’s just a fact I thought readers of this thread might be interested in.
Maher says inflammatory shit all the time, anytime religion comes up he will specifically shit on Islam more than others over weak arguments… Remember his come to Jesus moment over saying he was a “house n*****r” ??
He sure does. However, here it was about Hasan misrepresenting what Bill Maher had said. I’m not sure that Bill Maher misrepresents what other people have said. Maybe he does, but I just don’t know about it.
He thinks Christian’s can be misguided and extreme
He thinks all Muslims are driven by a violent religion
Those are general comments, not comments about specific people.
No, and this is a crazy conspiracy theory.
Clare Malone explained on the podcast Infamous that she started doing some investigating because she caught wind of some discrepancies due to the trail of the storytelling. For instance, brother Eric’s infiltration of mosques took place in 2006.
In addition, Maher has never been threatened by the Daily Show. It has an even smaller audience than it did in the Jon Stewart days, and he coexisted with the Stewart and Noah eras. This thread is just crazy thinking.
Maybe you’ve just found out the two were (not “are”) childhood friends. In a 2010 interview, Remnick described his connection to Maher like this:
DR: (laughs) You know Bill Maher and I grew up—he was a neighbor of the drummer of a rock band I was in; eventually it went by the name of Derek and the Dialectics—and during breaks in rehearsing in my friend’s basement, I played basketball in Bill’s driveway. Bill Maher’s father was, I think, a radio guy, a radio professional. We weren’t close at all. I see him every 10 years like clockwork. I hadn’t seen him in a long time.
Even if they are 69’ing as I type this, the idea that Maher is pulling the New Yorker’s strings seems like a stretch.
They’re totally 69’ing right now
I think this is a stretch and a conspiracy at the most. I have childhood friends whom I disagree with politically.
This is a nothing burger as far as evidence.
This is teetering into conspiracy land, and I seriously doubt it. Obviously there’s going to be some pro-Hasan bias on this sub, and I think that in full context the substance of the article is t as bad as presented BUT there are still legit ethics questions to the way Hasan presented his stories. The journalist who wrote the article I’ve followed for a long time and she’s legit, she’s not some hack out to do Bill Masher’s or anyone else’s bidding.
