I think they mentioned him being a writer once or twice in Season 1 but yeah, it was much better established in the comic. Though there he was a travel writer and the fact he used to write the sci-fi novels we see in the episode was revealed at this point.

All the Guardians are dead and most have had their brains reduced to mush. There’s no way to copy their memories into new bodies.
