  • It depends. I also used to devour series when I was younger, but slowed down a lot as I grew older.

Sometimes I do get into a devour mindset if I’m totally enraptured by the world. Earlier this year I read the 10 book Kate Daniels urban fantasy series in about a month. This past week, I read the 5 book The Others urban fantasy series in a week. I did a Red Rising re-read last month and read the first trilogy in a week.

If I really enjoy the world, I’ll read a series all in one, but I tend to read other books at the same time in different formats and that breaks things up a bit.

  • Harry Potter is my most memorable because my sister and I walked out of the store after buying our books, and some douchebag drove by screaming “Snape Kills Dumbledore!” out of his car window to a sidewalk of fans. I will never forget or forgive him. LOL

I think some events are still happening, but only when a book is really huge. Iron Flame, the sequel to Fourth Wing, had midnight release parties at Barnes & Noble when it came out this month.

My book club discord server is doing our own version of the awards, and I put together a list of GN/Comics/Manga for the year. It’s a mix of what I’ve read and from looking at various best of lists so I can explore more of what was released this year too.

    • The Moth Keeper by Kay O’Neill
    • Hungry Ghost by Victoria Ying
    • Tombs by Junji Ito
    • Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson
    • In Limbo by Deb JJ Lee
    • Darkly She Goes by Vincent Mallié
    • Night Fever by Ed Brubaker
    • Monica by Daniel Clowes
    • Roaming by Jillian and Mariko Tamaki
    • Shubeik Lubeik by Deena Mohamed
    • Public Domain Vol 1 by Chip Zdarsky
    • Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story by Sarah Kuhn
    • Lore Olympus Vol 4 by Rachel Smythe
    • Kaya Vol 1 by Wes Craig
    • Grim Vol 1 by Stephanie Phillips
    • Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons by Kelly Sue DeConnick
    • River’s Edge by Kyoko Okazaki
    • Oshi No Ko Vol 1 by Aka Akasaka
    • Is Love The Answer? by Uta Isaki
    • Dark Knights of Steel (DC ongoing comic) by Tom Taylor
    • The Variants by Gail Simone (Marvel)
    • The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz
    • Heartstopper Vol 5 by Alice Oseman

As of right now, my favorite of the year would be Dark Knights of Steel by Tom Taylor, and The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz.

  • The Swarm by Frank Schätzing. It was 400 pages too long, all the characters were disaster movie cardboard cutouts, it felt vaguely ignorantly racist, every single little bit of science/etc was explained at length, and every character made stupid, stupid decisions.

If, in a book about the oceans fighting back and killing humans, you still go on a sea dive in a DIVING SUIT at 70% into the goddamn book for no real reason, YOU DESERVE TO BE HUNTED BY SHARKS.
