Would Diane and Hollyhock be in his life still?
i don’t know about the other questions you asked, but these two i think would still have left his life, since their primary motivators for leaving him revolved around penny. not that the sarah lynn story didn’t play a part (particularly for diane), but i don’t think that not coming to the surface would have changed the end for these two characters in particular.
you appear to already have had a lot of spoilers, so if it’s the “ending” that you’re worried about, why not just spoil it for yourself and see if you are ok with investing knowing that’s the outcome.
the darkness and the refusal to look away, gloss over it, or “make it better” in this show is part of what makes it so fucking amazing and smart. but it isn’t nihilistic in that refusal to look away. i don’t know that i’d necessarily call it optimistic either. it’s really focused on choices people make, and what they’re willing to do to make meaningful relationships within a world we know is fucked up. and it is interested in change, even if that change won’t get you what you want from the people currently in your life (forgiveness, redemption, etc.).
if you need a show that tells you the world isn’t fucked up; that people who have done shitty things can be redeemed, and that this redemption can come through one grand gesture and everyone loves them again; then i don’t think bojack is for you.

it probably isn’t a specific philosophy since it isn’t really ascetic in nature, which is a hallmark of the “no attachment” philosophies. seems to just be a society-makes-us-miserable-so-go-live-in-the-woods + wealth thing.

It’s not the funniest episode overall, but I think the hardest I laughed in the show was Mr. Peanutbutter’s response to Diane about Rob Schneider’s surprise party
people get declared dead on arrival all the time, which is different than “dying at the hospital.” that would likely be public information, too.
I feel like the show’s creators are too thoughtful to just mix that up.
no. herb made it very clear that what he could never forgive bojack for was that he abandoned him as a friend when he needed a friend most. reaching out sooner rather than later wouldn’t change that fact.
