First episode of the new season was more noticeable for me, but I’m thinking that means the big stuff this season is going to look WILD. Hope I’m right, either way I’m loving everything the show has put out so far.

Invincible animation is not bad, I just with it was more detailed, I know it’s impossible to reach the art levels of the comics, but considering it’s just 8 episodes per season it could be a little better.

Can you imagine if it was made by the studio that does Arcane? It would be incredible but then we would wait like 5 years per season

Episode 4 (the mummy / Mars episode) took a bit of a dive in animation quality but the rest seemed pretty solid at worst and phenomenal at best. I felt like they were really going for that DC animation style but with a twist and for the most part really nailed it.

Thinking back there were a few of the background characters that were a bit out of place in group shots but even Disney and Pixar flicks can suffer from that.

It’s the 3D cars and helicopters that take me out.

Also the color and lighting is very bland and uninspired. That’s the most subpar thing about the animation. The fights look great and are really competent.

It always baffles me how Japanese anime series constantly churn out amazing animation while US animation series always look so primitive, with the exception of outliers like Arcane.

TBF I’m not really bothered by the animation style since the story is so good, but what bothers me is why Mark looks different from S1 lol.

They don’t always do amazing work or more like it differs from studio to studio. There are absolute beasts when it comes to animations like Madhouse but there are also a lot of cheaper ones. Also quality can be amazing and horrible withing the same episode, like focus point is one part of a scene and everything else is basically stickmen

Studio and budget aren’t that important at the professional level what really matters is freelancers and core staff that are working on the project.

Taking Madhouse as an example OPM S1 only looked as good as it did because they managed to get Shingo Natsume as a director and practically every talented animator in the industry flocked to the production just cause they wanted to work with him. Of course studio isn’t irrelevant but it’s far from the most important.

Yeah you’re right they aren’t always great. But I still think you get proportionally more good quality ones than in the US. Most Marvel and DC animations look very simple. Castlevania is good though.

Dragonball, maybe the biggest anime of all time had some really goofy derpy animations in DBS. No one is immune I guess. I miss traditional animation. But invincible gets close. And I love the 3d effect the use, reminds me of 90s spiderman, except it’s alot more smooth.

Have you seen most anime’s? Mostly it’s because they do long dragging shots and voice over. If you watch Naruto there’s a whole ton of characters thinking to themselves, B-roll with some bs commentary, etc

Japanese animation follows the strategy of producing an inhuman amount of series every three months and hoping that a few of them will make a profit. For every show with fantastic animation and masterful stories there are 30 who are God-awful and unforgettable.

Western animation tends to be consistent, with few being downright awful… or fantastic.

That said. Percentage-wise. I would say that Western studios create more good animated series than Japanese studios. Although, in total numbers of good series, it is the Japanese who take the podium.

Besides. Invincible is a great series and, in 8 cases out of 10, it does look great.

So this post doesn’t make much sense, to be honest…

I think overall anime is more popular in Japan than cartoons are in the west. Also Japanese attitudes about crunch or overwork help create really good looking animations

Like others have said, it’s studio by studio with anime. There are a few anime with amazing budgets and fantastic action scenes or details, but then you have ones that look and animate borderline “fine”. Seeing this is as close we’re getting to a “American Anime”, this falls under “the anime with a great budget, but only spent on certain places and scenes.”

Technically it’s a French studio that animated it all I believe, but might’ve been funded by US Netflix or some other distributor.

Japanese anime series constantly churn out amazing animation

One of the biggest anime airing is currently facing backlash for how poor the animation is, so this straight up isn’t true. Obviously there are plenty of well animated anime, just as there are plenty of well animated American shows

Difference in manga/anime culture too. Western animation/cartoon seems to have style that target specific audiences. You got kids and teenage cartoons. Then you got family friendly to adult cartoons ranging from Simpsons, King of the Hill, to Family Guy and South Park. Then you got superhero cartoons that target the teenage and adult comic fans. At least that’s how I see it.

Manga/anime has its own subgenres and target audience quite different from western cartoons. You got Shonen stuff that targets the kids to young adults, mostly men. Then shoujo for the girls. Seinan and the equivalent of it for women which targets an older audience. However within these genres there’s also subgenres like racing manga, gambling manga, supernatural, fantasy, isekai, mecha, etc. From my own observations, I think Japanese anime/manga covers a wider range of subjects.

Japanese Anime generally has a lower frame rate and also have you noticed how little happens in many episodes? They have a bunch of build up, also a lot of monologues and such all of that reduces in some way the workload.
