NOT DANGEROUS

The people who get mugged first are people like Armando, I don’t know if he is just putting a show but the whole thing is ridiculous. Armando and Kenny, are like going to Medellin Market and living in the Roma neighbourhood (that’s where all the foreigners live) it’s also one of the safest neighbourhoods in the city. It’s not like he is living in Oceania, Iztapalapa, La Viga or even Tláhuac. I’m born and raised in Mexico City, and I can say I have visited most of the city, and Armando being all freaked out about the city it’s like no dude, you don’t know the hoods in the city.

For anyone watching I can just tell you to come to visit Mexico City, the food it’s amazing from Michelin restaurants to stalls on the street, there is a lot of night life and if that’s not your thing there a lot of museums and beautiful architecture.

I’m on episode 2 so no spoilers please!

I am curious of your experience. One of my BFFs married a Mexican national (we’re in So Cal) about 20 years ago. The husband is about idle range brow. She’s mostly white with a little Mexican and some native. Their son come out very white. Very, very light. They went to Mexico City to visit family as well as the city and they were very cautious about their son when out and about because of the color of his skin. Was that an isolated fear?

It could very well be a plot device, but remember that Armando is from a very small town. It is not uncommon for people from rural areas to be jumpy about cities.

Also, don’t forget that there was a period of time (early 2000s) when LOTS of people were moving from DF to other places like Cancun for two main factors: more job opportunities and safety. Granted, Cancun is now pretty dicey itself. But pretty much every person I know who moved out of the city had at least one very personal experience with crime.

I agree with you! I think Mexico City pre 2005 was a wild city. I would say post 2016 has been very safe and even corruption has come down (there are just in higher levels) but technology has play a lot of changes in street security. I think if someone comes to visit they are not going to stay let’s say Tláhuac because that’s too far from the tourist places, transit it’s not great if you don’t live or stay near a metro station or a metrobús station. So yes people are going to be in Roma, Condesa, Centro, anything over Insurgentes.

Kind of off topic, but I am hoping to visit Mexico City next summer- I am currently learning Spanish. Can one get around pretty well with just basic Spanish language skills?

5 years ago I spent 5 months traveling through Mexico and at one place I met a guy from Mexico City and he had been kidnapped (is it still called that when people are adults?) 3 times in Mexico City. He actually advised me to avoid it but maybe it’s gotten better.

I’m not going to say kidnappings doesn’t exist but they usually happen to people who live there, they monitor them and know their moves and value. If you are just a tourist on a tourist area nothing it’s going to happen.

I’ve been to CDMX and I never once felt unsafe. And I was going out and coming in late at night. But that’s the country mindset: “big city, scary, don’t go”

I don’t know if armando has been to Mexico city before and is just basing his opinions off his mother’s bad experience in the past or if it is just manufactured drama by tlc

I saw this episode too. I’m from Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Mexico City is beautiful and you’re completely right, they aren’t in the barrio. I was embarrassed as a Mexican, that Armando would be that naive about Mexico and act like that. I’ve stayed in Cuauhtemoc a few times. It’s a beautiful city.

There are so, so many smash n grabs in parked cars on Maui (you know, paradise, right?) at the hundreds of beaches that those who live there keep windows down and valuables in their trunk.

I just got back from Mexico City and it felt safer there than in NYC. My MIL was the same as Armando she was acting like as soon as we get off the plane someone with a knife with our name is out to get us. The city has seriously changed and has gotten better, we loved Mexico City.

Did you see the British version of 90days? One was filmed in Mexico City and it was interesting how the foreigner was scared to step outside.

I can’t speak for what’s said in the UK, but I find the media in Canada and US paint all of Mexico to look like it’s straight out of Narcos. Now, I’m sure there’s a fair share of dangerous areas, but there’s plenty of safe areas as well.

From my own experience, I stayed in Monterrey for 3 months, and would frequently visit. There was never a time where I felt my life was in danger.

Or how her family insinuated his family couldn’t be trusted with their luggage. Honestly I think the production company has getting away with pushing their own stereotyped bigotry and ignorance for years with these stupid storylines.
