currently reading through the comic, and its really great, but im confused as to why the immortal and a bunch of other heroes are trying to stop rex’s control over the usa (and maybe the entire world? but thats not been totally clarified yet). Rex’s way of doing things really isnt very different to the way that government works all over the world already, and from the looks of things, he’s doing it better. The government is already an organisation that operates above the people it governs and controls their lives, and people already dont get much of a say in how that governing is done. We have elections, sure, but thats just representative and is just choosing whoever is the most powerful person in a given country, but we dont really have a lot of agency in exactly what that person does after they are elected. and as for killing a lot of heroes, any other government would have done the same thing if people tried to rise up against them. it just seems to me that if the goal of the resistance is just to go back to how it was before, all they are really doing it making things worse. I mean, immortal was literally abe linclon, he should know how this stuff works. All that being said, i havent fully finished the arc just yet, so maybe im wrong about a few things.

Rex’s last term as world emperor ended with him ordering a genocide due to a personal vendetta. You really want that guy to have absolute power over all of Earth?

i mean, i dont wanna get overly political cos i dont wanna get banned, and im meant to just be talking about the story here, but earth is kinda already run mostly by genocidal maniacs. the various governments of the world, especially the most powerful ones, have killed millions and millions of people in the name of defense, and continue to do so to this day. im not saying rex’s way is the best way, im just saying its better than how it was before

Please don’t be so politically apathetic, if you think everything is so fucked don’t act like you have no power, use your power! Vote, participate in protests, support organizations working against the atrocities of those in power. Many governments have fallen to the power of the people, so never think you’re powerless

we dont have democracy. we have representation. true democracy is direct democracy, and no country in the world currently operates under that model

You had to put the word “direct” in front of your “true” democracy because it is actually just a type of democracy. The most common form of democracy is “representative” democracy, which is (surprisingly?) not the same thing as despotism

actually, thats not totally true. places like Rojava in syria and the regions of mexico under the control of the zapatistas have a lot of directly democratic elements.

That’s the justification in why “He won” since Mark, Nolan, and Eve realise that prohibiting what Robot is doing at this point would make the world worse. There’s more to it and you can kinda tell based on what happened with the Flaxans but I won’t spoil it.

I always interpreted less as “they let Robot get away with it because he was right” and more as “they let Robot get away with it because it was too late for any alternative”. His takeover was so quick and comprehensive that removing him from power after the fact would just leave a massive power vacuum that no one else could really fill at the time. The Viltrumites could hypothetically fill that void by sheer force, but Nolan wasn’t interested in going back to their conquering past, even if it would have been (hypothetically) justified in this case. They didn’t go ahead and put him down out of revenge because it just wasn’t worth it, and would come at a high personal cost that many remaining heroes, like Mark and Eve, just weren’t willing to risk. The series as a whole is full of instances of revenge or purely punitive action just not being worth it or helpful, and Robot’s takeover is the epitome of that. What Robot did was monstrous and just wrong, but once it was done there just wasn’t much to be gained from taking him down, and everything to lose.

they let Robot get away with it because he was right" and more as “they let Robot get away with it because it was too late for any alternative”.

Thats essentially what I meant since they knew the world at the moment was peaceful and getting involved would disrupt that peace.

[Huge comic spoilers]>!But specifically for Nolan and especially Mark based on his last talk with Robot in the flesh, he recognised that having someone of Robot’s intellect made the world a better place. Its just that he realised Robot doesn’t have the restraint and compassion for human life which was why the brain solution was chosen to assist Immortal.!<

“Those who give up freedom for security deserve neither, and will lose both.”

If you have to kill all your fucking friends to secure world peace, it wasn’t worth it imo. You killed all the people that helped you get there and deserved more than anyone else to see the world you created from it. In this case the ends just do not justify the means

With this logic were the Viltrumites not right from the very beginning? They would’ve brought peace, stability, and advanced tech to Earth; why would it have mattered if they killed a few million or billion innocents to enact their shining utopia?

It is honestly terrifying how many people read stories that not-very-subtly highlight that good intentions or even results don’t make evil deeds less evil and walk away thinking “Well who cares about the X number of innocents who had to die to make things work, it worked right?”
