So I finished, fourth wing last night and I’m totally disappointed, it’s the worst book I’ve read this year and one of the worst I’ve read in recent times, I read so many positive reviews about it that I expected a totally incredible story, nothing in the book works, the writing almost amateur( Wattapp says Hello!) character without personality, repetitive plot( I got sick of reading Violeta saying so much: I’m smaller and Brittle than everyone else) the feeling I had was that Rebecca Yarros intended to write a YA, but then because she wanted to write adult scenes (laughable by the way) changed the age of the characters to over twenty, without changing anything in the plot, all their attitudes and everything they do is as if they were 15 year old teenagers, nothing is original, the academy part sounds like a bad copy of Sabaa Tahir’s The Ember in the Ashes (it’s actually a great example of a well-written fantasy series), the dragons are a duller version of How to Train Your Dragon, the romance part is so childish and shameful, and the plot twist at the end was obvious from the beginning I know that most people loved the book and I respect that, but I would like to know if anyone else has a similar opinion.

I’ve seen people say it’s the best fantasy they’ve read and I’m like…. Oh so you don’t actually read fantasy?

If a book comes out with print on the edge of the pages, I automatically assume it’s bad and they did that to give the book a gimmick that will make it stand out on the shelf so more people will buy it. It might not be true, but I haven’t been proven wrong yet so I’m gonna stick with that rule for now.

If you’re going to bash people for liking this book, at least define what “fantasy” means to you before saying a book isn’t fantasy. Don’t be so mean. For some people, this may be their favorite fantasy book. And so what if it is?

It‘s one of my fav fantasy books so far, simply because I don‘t read much fantasy 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️

I tried getting into the genre, but the top regarded books seem to be focused way too much on men and blabla. I just don‘t care what another straight white guy has to say about the world.

I will take silly cheesy YA fantasy over old white man fantasy all day long >! If someone has a recommendation with a fresh view, pls share !<

You know those aren’t the only options, right? There’s plenty of serious, adult fantasy written by women and non-straight, white, or old men. It’s fine to just prefer silly cheese, which it sounds like you do, but maybe just say that.

As for a recommendation, Robin Hobb has been mentioned elsewhere so I’ll throw in a series I think was criminally overlooked- God’s of the Caravan Road by K.V. Johansen.

Clearly you’ve done zero research into the state of modern fantasy before posting this.

Tress of the Emerald Sea is a Sanderson book. It’s a standalone set in his “Cosmere”

The Fifth Season trilogy is pretty good.

Small town Big magic, not exactly high fantasy but witches and stuff, it’s ok. Easy read.

          No Gods, No Monsters.

They didn’t say it wasn’t fantasy (which I would take issue with - people are way too willing to call soemthign not fantasy just because it’s also a romance).

They said it was a bad fantasy.

Which honestly I think is true.

They said, “I’ve seen people say it’s the best fantasy they’ve read and I’m like…. Oh so you don’t actually read fantasy?”

Does this not imply they think this book is not fantasy?

How can you be on a sub for books and have such bad reading comprehension?

No, it means the person they are referring to must not read fantasy because they are unable to correctly judge that this particular novel is bad fantasy when compared to other fantasy novels.

Yo. Relax. I didn’t bash anyone and I didn’t say it’s not fantasy. It is. I’m just saying that people who call it their favorite fantasy probably don’t read a lot of other fantasy books. It’s totally ok to like bad books, I’ve enjoyed my fair share of Colleen Hoover and SJM. It’s like when people say that I must not read a lot of spicy books because I thought ACOTAR was spicy. Are they wrong? No. Was ACOTAR spicy? Yes. It just wasn’t the best or the most spicy a book could be. And that’s ok.
