I’m interested in how UK and USA audiences might have reacted to Ted Lasso differently and I feel like the amount of fucks said might have led to a different amount of fucks given.
No. But I’m married to a Brit so…
I think a lot of people outside of the US don’t have a good sense of genuinely how HUGE and diverse the US is. Different places might as well be completely different countries in terms of customs, language, lifestyle, sensibilities, and of course politics unless you’ve been living under a rock haha.
Did I even notice that there’s language in Ted Lasso as a New Yorker? Fuck no. Would an evangelical Christian living in rural Kentucky have a problem with it? Oh my heavens yes.
No
I didn’t give a shit about that shit. Swearing is like verbal seasoning to me and TL was juuust right for me. Zero fucks given over here. I’m in the US if my name didn’t give it away (Atlanta)
Well HBO has been around forever so…no. Plus fuck is my favorite word.
Have you seen the history of swear words with Nic Cage? The episode on the word Fuck is really entertaining
The Wire has a scene where two detectives examine a crime scene and just say the word “fuck” every time they find a clue all the way until they make their conclusion . Honestly, knowing the characters involved and how they filmed the scene, it was the perfect amount of dialogue needed.
Are you kidding? The US doesn’t really have an issue with swearing. Yeah we try and curb it depending on the network, but Ted Lasso’s swear count is pretty tame.
The swearing on TL is nothing compared to most prestige shows. I’d say the swearing count on any random pair of episodes of The Sopranos or The Wire is higher than a whole season of Ted Lasso.
The US actually does have an issue with swearing. They do it too much.
Succession has a pretty high fucks per episode count
Haha. True. Logan Roy’s catchphrase for instance
Not in our house, but I can’t speak for all 330,000,000 of us that are living over here. I’d guess there would be more than a few households where any swearing at all would make a show a no-go—but, I don’t have any family or friends like that in my life anymore.
Seemed excessive, but not a big deal.
No, because they stuck with curse words that are familiar to US audiences (fuck) instead of actual British curse words. For instance, I don’t recall the use of the c-word which would have been on point.
Twat has seeped into my vernacular due to this show.
This is the right answer. If they had the fans speak like real English fans the show would never get to air.
I don’t mind it in general but I didn’t like that >!they had the fan that Isaac attacked use f*****!<, when I feel like there are 5 or 6 other slurs that are more likely in the Uk. But then I’m not a football fan and I don’t hang out with homophobes so I might well be wrong!
Yeah, cunt might be the only word that an American audience would have trouble with, which I think is why it was left out. It’s not typically used in a cheeky or fun way here.
Only place in the US that is fine with that word is Massachusetts right? Or am I just projecting a certain freckled comedian’s verbiage to an entire state lol
Closest we got was replacing the E in Kent with a U.
It took me a RIDICULOUS amount of time to get that joke.
i could be mis-remembering but i think i saw an interview (with brett maybe?) where he said that appletv wouldn’t let em use the c word.
Maybe but I know they use it more than a couple times in it’s always sunny
I believe it. It’s pretty jarring for many Americans.
Fuck no.
Not at all. There are some swear words here that are less used but swearing is def a part of our usual conversation.
The only surprise wasn’t about the show, it was about Apple. There had been (incorrect) rumors that Tim Cook had been demanding that all shows on Apple TV+ be PG rated, with no swearing, nudity, violence, or sex involved.
Although enough shows had aired on Apple to know the swearing part was wrong, as were most other things listed there, Ted Lasso was the mainstream’s first exposure to Apple TV+ so the amount of swearing was a surprise to some.
But that all. Otherwise, fuck no, it’s been fine.
American here, not a problem at all. I thought it was fucking brilliant tbh
No fucking way, dude!
Heavy swearing? Multiple killings? Blood everywhere? No problem!
Half a nipple? Hell no!
