The Office, Shameless, The Thick Of It (Veep), etc were all shows set in England before being remade for American audiences with great success.

What it look like if the same was done for Ted Lasso?

I think Ted Lasso needs a US remake the least of any UK-set show ever written. Unlike those other shows, Ted Lasso is specifically written to be watchable for US audiences. Ted is a conduit for US viewers, as he learns about British football culture the viewers learn with him. UK viewers get to see an outsider’s perspective on it all.

It really is a cross cultural show unlike any other I can think of, perhaps outside of the sci-fi genre. (Thinking of Dr. Who, l though I think an average Brit would be faster to pick up on a Dr. Who reference than the average American). Perhaps also outside the historical genre (thinking of The Crown here as well)

It already is an American show, produced by Hollywood, the only thing British about it is the setting.

Setting aside the fact everyone has already corrected you on the fact it’s indeed an American show, can someone please explain to me:

Why is it that Americans feel any decent show needs an “American remake”? Are you incapable of enjoying foreign-produced media without wanting to warp it and re-contextualize it for the American experience? Is there something inherently inferior to all non-American media? Sure feels like that’s the implication.

Hollywood needs to stop remaking every damn thing! This was the first original story I’ve seen in ages and it needs to just be for a while without some bozo remaking it.

This is a show made for Americans…

But after watching Welcome to Wrexham, I’m not sure we have quite the equivalent culturally, of how much a community involves itself with a team - and how much that team is involved with the community.

I say this living in “Seahawk/Mariner/Kraken” country with friends still deeply bitter about the loss of the Sonics and who have boycotted Starbucks ever since. It doesn’t hit quite the same, I don’t think. The Greyhounds aren’t “London and the suburbs team” it is Richmond’s. Seattle Seahawks don’t even just play for Seattle - but the Pacific Northwest if someone is going to root for the “local” team. Even so, you are going to find people in Portland, Oregon who root for a football team in the South or East Coast or California before they’d root for the Seahawks.

Maybe college teams are more equivalent - being a Husky fan or a Cougar fan tends to be a generational thing even if no one has attended those universities.

Agree. I’m also in Seattle area, and as a die-hard Husky fan, Ted Lasso has always felt more like University fandom to me. It’s one of the many reasons I like it, and also how I’ve become a futbol fan (Go Wrexham!!) But if Richmond was a real team?? I’d be as die-hard as I am a Husky fan!

As a Husky Alum and college football fan, what I’ve seen of Ted and Wrexham does remind me way more of college sports than pro here in the states. College fans are way more dedicated and fanatic. Each team has its traditions and long history (although a lot of that is going away with the TV networks trying to make college football more like the NFL), and you have that draw to the community of being an alum. No matter where life takes you, you’ll always be a fan of your school, and pass that on to your children.

And sorry to you as a Husky… I think it is even more like college football for schools like WSU, or OSU in Corvallis. You see Husky stuff in Seattle, but it isn’t EVERYWHERE. If you were to see someone wearing a Coug shirt or a Duck shirt at say, Pike Place Market, you might glance at them but you wouldn’t think THAT much about it. (You see all 4 schools represented in places like Cannon Beach - it can be a conversation starter!)

But you walk through Corvallis with a Duck jersey on, or Pullman with a Husky tshirt on, there better be a game happening. People will probably stare.

Where it differs is that members of the same family can have different allegiances (despite what I previously said) - my cousins (siblings) went to University of Oregon and Oregon State. There were two years where they were both college students as well. Both followers of football, and supporters of their universities. (They are also the first ones in the family to go to those schools). Makes for interesting sibling rivalry! On the other hand, during the Apple Cup, I root for WSU because that is where my Dad went for Grad school (although I don’t follow sports - I’m in it for the cheese, mainly. Cougar Gold is the bomb!)

A character that’s like a Sir Alex Ferguson stand in, gets a job coaching at an SEC school.

Despite working out for them TL was basically a way for them to avoid repatriating money earned in the UK (Disney was pretty good at doing this too over the years). The bonus is we got a great show and they got a very successful product out of it. It was win/win for Apple and us. A similar show filmed in the US wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense for them right now. Another one set in UK though or maybe another country where they make a crap ton of revenue and don’t want to pay taxes on bringing that money back to the US …
