What’s your reasoning for having different editions of the same book/series?

Why do you choose one book/series over the other books you have?

How much are you willing to spend on editions?

I’ve recently watched a lot of tik toks of people showing their different editions of their favorite books/series and I got curious.

Sometimes i forget especially if its a book I’ve read and is packed away i forget if its a library book or mine sometimes I’ll be a hardcover if I’ve only got the soft cover or if i like the cover art better on a certain edition (I’ve bought two books used because i didn’t like the ver. That they were currently printing)

My mom likes to buy every copy of this one daily devotional type book for everyone she knows she gives them away I’ve been debating this with where the heart is but mostly cause i have a accident extra copy

I recently ordered two different editions from the library of wuthering heights one was a annotated ver. (With a translation on what the hell Joseph is saying and i swear if it doesn’t have a translation in normal editions for him its not worth it)

I want a different edition of alice cause one i got at the library explained different words that i thought was interesting versus my copy doesn’t

Im sure theres more plus collectors the thing i don’t get is multiple copies of the same edition and they just sit on your shelf

I’ve got a neighbor that joins me for tea from time to time whom believes in minimalism, yet somehow also wants to be a prepper. I told her that once the power gos out, those books and cards are all that stands between me being able to entertain myself, and me becoming a cannibalistic raider from boredom.

I kept buying A Christmas Carol in my early 20s absolutely CONVINCED that it was abridged and I could find an unabridged edition. It is in fact just a very short book.

Also I have memory problems due to medications and I’m an impulse buyer when it comes to books, so that explains the rest.

The series that I have the most books of is hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (5 books). I bought the first book to see if I like it, after that I got a cheap hitchhiker’s guide that had all 5 books in one giant book. I thought " hey thats great! Now i have a book that has it all and the other one I can lend to people!". After covid i thought that when I re-read I have the problem that if I want to read book 2-5 I have to always carry the giant version and I love to read on trains so I got one of those special version with the 5 single books in a case.

And then I have 2 special versions because I just love a pretty cover!

Yes I used to do that for pretty covers and signed editions of the books I’m a fan of. I would even go as far as collecting the books in their original language (non-english) even though I couldn’t understand a thing. I don’t do that anymore though - now I just sometimes have a copy of the ebook, in addition to a hardcopy, for easier reading at night.

I have 8 copies of Dune, each of which is either of a different edition or a different printing order within a particular edition. There are several reasons why I have this many copies. First, this is obviously a book that I love. It’s probably my all-time favorite sci-fi novel. Second, I am a collector, so I try to look for different editions and printing orders of books, as some are more highly sought after, rarer, and more valuable than others. Third, it’s fun and beautiful to see how all the different covers and the book’s printing history have evolved over time. Below is a link to my 8 different copies of Dune if anyone is curious.

I have 3 copies of Persuasion. 1st is from my Nan but it’s falling apart so I got a 2nd one from a charity shop that was in much better condition, and then I got a 3rd copy as part of a set that someone gifted to me.

Despite having 3 copies, I saw another edition with a beautiful cover and gold edges yesterday and was THIS close to buying it. Luckily for my wallet I make it a rule to not buy books over £25, no matter how pretty they are.

I have two editions of Edgar Allan Poe complete tales and poems. I ordered the Easton Press edition because it was just the best looking leather cover I had ever seen with the skull and raven. I also ordered the Suntup numbered edition. I love them both. The Suntup is by far the better quality of the two.

There are two schools of thought, or most ways of thinking fall into two sides of the same coin. I have a classical and jazz copy of my music theory books, for example

I’ll buy a special edition or a copy that’s signed. I’ve started buying editions of my favorite kid’s book that have different illustrations. There is a trilogy released all over, but I specifically only bought the books when I was in a certain country because I’m weird, so I had another copy of the second book for a while.

My dad had at least 5 copies of Stephen King’s the wastelands because he bought one, my grandmother gifted him one, he forgot he had 2 copies and bought one, and he was gifted the others because he was the Stephen King guy.

Why are people gifting book 3 in a series if they don’t know what someone has?

That’s a bit worse than me 😂I think people try and be nice by getting books for people but they don’t bother checking if people have them first
