when bojack got assigned as the professor, we see he is trying to have a good relationship with hollyhock (obvioudly he should give her-’ her 'space but then she just disregards him and it feels very rude to me )

Hollyhock recently found out about Penny. She has no way of knowing if Bojack is a sexual threat to her and/or her friends.

Hollyhock straight up tells him she doesn’t want to be around him when he’s drinking. He suggests something else. She keeps trying to make it clear that she feels he invaded her life and Bojack just keeps pushing.

She had no choice but to ignore him or let him stomp all over her boundaries. He can’t take a hint or consider her perspective and that’s pretty rude.

BoJack is rude to everyone, a lot of the time. Including Hollyhock. He isn’t owed politeness and the things he did are not acceptable. He knew why she was distancing herself from him, he just didn’t know the exact reason.

I feel like this sub is biased toward hollyhock. I mean the comments are proof of that. yea, bojack is a toxic asshole but that’s beside the point. she never gave Bojack a chance considering everything he had done for her (putting aside what he had done to others)

She was not rude, she didn’t owe Bojack anything, she just got the news about New Mexico, she doesn’t want to have a relationship with him. That’s it. Sometimes people want to change and by that time is too late.

I hate it when people suggest that Hollyhock was in the wrong somehow for not giving Bojack another chance as if everthing she went through wasn’t traumatic enough. As if she wasn’t a literal teen being held responsible for the emotions of an abusive way-older adult. In her eyes he is a pedophile, probably, why would she be anything but rude/scared of him and wanting to avoid him at all costs?

Okay so I feel like we need to contextualize a few things here.

Initially, she opened up to him about the acting teacher at her college leaving their job. Bojack almost immediately decided this was an offer for them to be closer together and decides to take that job without once consulting her to see if she’d be okay with her 50+ year old half brother who happens to be a celebrity suddenly being a prof at her college. Imagine if you found out someone like your mom or dad was a teacher at your school/college? It’s gonna be awkward as fuck and you’re gonna wanna keep your distance, right? That’s exactly what ended up happening. Bojack was being annoying and clingy and Hollyhock had enough at one point and decided to establish clear cut boundaries. Bojack complied. This is just the setup though.

We have the setup established. Now is where things start getting juicy. Hollyhock ends up running into Pete Repeat at a party, and finds out about how Bojack took some high schoolers to prom (something that’s already really awkward) and got them drunk. One of them ended up getting drunk enough to need to go to the hospital, and instead of taking responsibility for it, Bojack just left her there at the hospital with Pete to deal with it, an experience which was very traumatizing for both of them. Take this knowledge and combine it with her own experience of overdosing on amphetamines in his house (an event which was admittedly not Bojack’s fault), a connection has been made: young people get intoxicated around Bojack, often with substances provided by Bojack. Shortly after, the news breaks out about his involvement in Sarah Lynn’s death. We now have another person of a significantly younger age than Bojack who became intoxicated in his presence. Connections made, patterns established. This brings us back to the beginning now. This guy, a known drug addict, with a clear history of being around younger people when they end up being fatally intoxicated on drugs provided by him, now has a job where he’s an authority figure to younger people. It’s easy to see why she would want to keep further distance from him and potentially even cut him off.

Now, as for the nature of her disconnection from Bojack, I don’t think there was any better way to do it for her than by changing her phone number and sending a strongly worded letter to him. We’ve all seen firsthand that Bojack is a pretty good manipulator, and if he has the chance to verbally convince you to stick around, he will do it and he will succeed. He did it with PC. He did it with Todd. He did it with Diane. He did it with Wanda. All these characters would’ve ditched his ass if he didn’t sweet talk them into sticking around just a little longer. Hollyhock would’ve recognized this and decided that the only outcome that would result from telling him in person was that he would sweet talk her into backtracking on her decision to leave him. Ghosting him completely was the only way.

Tl;Dr: the relationship was already awkward when he decided to take the teaching job at her college without asking her about it. After that, the combination of her own experience, Pete’s testimony, and the knowledge that came out about Sarah Lynn, Hollyhock was able to conclude that there was a very concerning pattern involving young people overdosing on drugs/alcohol around Bojack that, in most scenarios, are provided by him. She also knows Bojack is a master manipulator and would find a way to keep her in his life if she talked things out with him. As a result, ghosting him was the only way to truly cut ties with him.

How would Hollyhock have recognized this though? She wasn’t around when he did all those things. Ghosting BoJack definitely wasn’t the only way for her to handle it, it’s just the way she chose (and of course, that was her prerogative). But it could have gone any number of ways.

She literally experienced it herself when she flushed his pills, got guilted thinking that they were medication for his back, and spent all night breaking and entering around LA only to find out that they weren’t medication and Bojack lied to her

I think we could even argue she did not ghost him. She wrote him a letter. And I don’t think anyone of us knows what was in that letter. For all we know, it could have been extremely loving and kind, but with firm boundaries that she couldn’t be in his life anymore. The truth is, we don’t know how Hollyhock said goodbye to Bojack, we just know that she did.

What’s she supposed to do, wait for him to fuck up so bad it puts her life in danger? Fuck that, she made the right/smart choice, cutting ties with him when she did. BoJack has already proven himself to be so toxic, that he was actually too dangerous for her to be around. And frankly, nobody, especially a young woman like her, needs that kind of person in their life.

I don’t understand why people think that BoJack deserves other characters’ politeness when he’s rarely polite. It’s mindboggling. She needed to protect herself from him and his strategies to lure her back into his misery. If she’d told him in person, he would’ve had yet another opportunity to do to her what he did to Diane, PC, Todd, Wanda, etc.: lie, manipulate, guilt, overwhelm, gaslight (or whatever other emotionally abusive verb) them into staying for another round of his toxic cycling.

I was ECSTATIC for her that she went no contact.

You’re right and you should say it. People get so attached to Bojack and forget that on top of being a bad person (and incredibly well-written), he’s simply a downright dick 92% of the time

Nobody is obligated to explain themselves if they want to distance themselves, especially not to people you think are creepy/could potentially hurt you. Yes it’s rude, sometimes you need to be rude to get the point across.

Noone, noone is obligated to give bojack any chance or explanation and hollyhock does not need to overlook everything she found out just because bojack is family.

I agree and on top of that, Hollyhock had also her own issues to take care of.
Body Image for example, she was uncomfortable with her weight and Beatrice drugged her to make her lose weight.
Trust issues (after Bojack deliberately tried to buy drugs while she was around, even knowing that he needs it for his pain, the methods he used were all illegal to say the least. And the way Bojack had Hollyhock to sneak into Gina’s house.)

Hollyhock was bound to distance herself from Bojack, it was good for her that she did!

    She had to;

    • Beatrice drugged her (denting her trust in Bojack and Bea)
    • Bojack asked her to sneak into Gina’s house for Pain meds
    • He took her into a desperate trip to buy more drugs.
(that she ditched, but his methods were shady to say the least)
    • She learned from Pete that Bojack gave alcohol to her friend.

Rude or not, these are more than reason enough. If you had a history similar to this with your ex, would you break contact?

Don’t forget the second interview with Briscuits Braxby, when it revealed that for 17 minutes, he left Sarah Lynn to die, just to protect his own image. There’s no way in hell I would want to be around someone like that either.

Prior to the Biscuits Braxby interview, Hollyhock’s behavior was reasonable at least. She didn’t handle Bojack’s imposition as well as she could have, but she’s young, Bojack is still relatively new to her life, and she already has the baggage of the weight loss pill incident. It wouldn’t be fair to expect her to be good at establishing boundaries with Bojack, who struggles with the same issue at the same time, just less destructively than normal thanks to the rehab. She was rude, and I don’t think Bojack deserved it, but I wouldn’t hold it against her, either. It can be looked past.

After the interview, her reaction was completely correct. We don’t know what was in the letter, but we don’t need to know. Whatever it was was long enough to require a second page. I imagine it took one of two tones: excoriating and hostile, or plain and definitive. I usually go with the latter in my mind. Either way, all we know is that it’s done, and Hollyhock has committed to it. She would be right to react either way to the revelations of the interview.

I’m going to guess that, if you have children, that they probably are not terribly fond of you, and that that confused you.

I say that because a friend’s parent who was always emotionally abusive growing up just couldn’t wrap his head around why people didn’t like him after a life time of shit. Or even a few minutes.

Step off and get some perspective.
