Bojack is so intricate with details and you see references from the last season to the first that were obviously intentional, so many hidden gems, this shit was definitely completely written out before they started producing the first episode.

Breaking bad imo but I can’t think of any others.

Seeing different answers in the comments.

When most ppl ask “What’s a show like Bojack” I think of a comedy that perfectly handled mature and dark themes in a somber yet still hilarious way. For a while the only solid suggestion was Fleabag. (I would personally add ‘The Other Two’ to that list, as it’s brilliantly hilarious and, like Bojack, is very industry and Hollywood themed, but also addresses situations related to getting what you truly want and still not being happy, and perhaps questioning happiness.)

So, for some ppl “a show like Bojack” would specifically mean a show about handling the existential questions in life but spoken in a fun and readable way.

For others, “a show like Bojack” means just a hilarious show that has a lot of running gags and connects the jokes in a comedically brilliant and usually clever way. For this, I would say Arrested Development and Community 100% fit the bill. I would also add Futurama, what we do in the shadows, The Good Place, maybe Schitts Creek and few other sitcoms

For OP, I believe they are specifically talking about the aspect of setting bread crumbs and intentional foreshadowing when they talk about “shows like Bojack”. The comments have listed a lot of them, but it seems like you’re going for very Slow Burn and character driven shows, so Succession, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Barry, The Wire, maybe you’d like White Lotus.

I gotta be honest tho, none of those strike me as ‘Bojack-like’ at all. I don’t think Bojack is the type of show that set intentional foreshadowing traps beyond a season. I think they went back and rewatched and thought of great call backs like bringing back “don’t stop dancing”, but I dont think watching Bojack Horseman feels anything similar to watching shows like Breaking Bad or Severance

The Good Place is one of the best written comedy shows that deals with similar themes of how to be a better person and the societal obsticals built into that. What’s impressive about the writing to me is how the characters kept learning and their new understandings lead to new actions and new problems. Each season has a major paradigm shift and the ending is perfect.

Dark on Netflix, three seasons and so confusing you’ll need a notebook to follow all the connections but at the end of it all you’ll be amazed how everything ties together.

Imo. The best substitutes isn’t his regard. Are moral Orel and succession. They both have the writing, emotional depth and awareness of greater societal influences (religious conservatism in Orel and billionaire entrepreneurs in succession as compared to Hollywood) with deeply layered characters and situations that manage to draw viewers in with the tragicomedy esque tone.

Arrested Development has the same thing where seemingly random plot lines or jokes with no punchline suddenly have a payoff and punchline episodes and episodes later. It’s that same smart humor. However, a LOT of it has not aged well.
