As a current resident of LA, yes it really is that expensive even for a crappy house. A house on our block went up for sale. We live two blocks off of the 405. Hadn’t been updated since the 70s. Went up for sale for 1.5 million. Insane.
Nothing in my neighborhood is under $3.5 and that’s a fixer upper. We’re moving out of the city.

To be fair, we never “own” property . Stop paying property tax and you’ll see who the real owner is (the bank) . Buying a home is a scam. It was invented to keep people in debt and to keep the bank strong with those high interest rates. I did research for this at university

I understand property tax, but if I pay $300k in rent vs 300k on a mortgage, the second scenario is the only one in which I can get any of that money back.

That poster is underselling it. Its basically around 70 degrees all year which is different than being 80 degrees all year or 90 degrees all year.
I wish 90 was the highest. 70 sounds much better for sure. But honestly I want seasons and some actual cold weather for part of the year. I’m moving up north before that stops being a thing.

Lol I went to Venice high school and it would get really cold and rain during the fall/winter. It also hailed once so I wouldn’t say it’s warm year round.

My parents live on the beach in Florida and need to pay $15k every few years for sand restoration. The sand erodes from the beach and they need to pump it from the middle of the ocean back to the beach. Also, all of their cars and outdoor things (windows, door knobs, outdoor furniture) gets ruined from the salt air.
I mean I’m 20 minutes from the beach in Florida. And I’m very lucky I bought my house before the market blew up. But for $25k a month I could have the same size house, much newer build, and own it outright in 3-4 years.

I live in an LA suburb, about 5 miles from the beach and pay ~$2000/month for a 2 bedroom, one bathroom. In Inglewood, it would probably be less for the same size apartment, even less for a one bedroom or studio. Yes, LA is more expensive than most places in the US but it’s not as crazy as they’re making it out to be. Rob might be fine with going outside to use the bathroom, but it’s totally normal that Sophie doesn’t want to. It doesn’t even sound like she wants something super fancy, she just wants to be able to use the bathroom without leaving her apartment.
Yeah wanting an in-unit bathroom is a basic ask. I can’t imagine living in a place where I don’t have my own bathroom.

Yep, I think he’s like “oh look at those houses, $25k a month we can’t afford to move!” when he’s just cheap and lazy. I still think he’s living in someone’s converted garage that isn’t zoned for having someone living there so he’s playing like $500 a month. Which is fine when it’s just him, but it’s not out of line for Sophie to want an indoor bathroom. If he can’t afford that, he shouldn’t be importing a girlfriend who can’t work for several months. I suppose she might still be doing social media stuff although I’m not sure about the legality of that since she doesn’t have a green card.

Your rent actually doesn’t sound too bad. I’m in Florida and you can get a nice place for that, but not really too different from what you’re talking about. And you probably have higher wages than you would here.
only the very rich (a LOT of very famous actors and actresses and people in the film industry) but beach houses right on the ocean. they can afford it no problem, i was in malibu beach recently and saw pierce brosnan’s house, which he put on the market for $300 mil (it didn’t sell lol but still. beachfront property is out of reach for the 99%
Your rent is under the current market value. Ive been trying to move to a 2 bedroom and cant find anything under $2400; most 2 bedrooms are around $2500-$2700 right now. Rents have gone up a lot in the past 2-3 years.

Venice is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in LA and super desirable. I don’t know why beyond the ocean- I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been followed and harassed by homeless people there. It’s so fucking scary at night.
