He could never understand what she sacrificed and lost for her powers, and asks her to stop using them. When helping people is the one thing that might bring her some peace.

Also, who just verbally insults their kid all day everyday anytime. It’s like he lives to insult Eve for no reason. I feel as if Eve endured it for so long, was because it’s so small to her and her understanding of the world.

I don’t say parents, because her adopted mom is a victim too. Dealing with her own issues and subject to her husbands personal abuse as well. She could leave, but it could take the voice of some one else or even professionals to realize that.

This back story is such great writing and insight to a major character.

I haven’t read the comics or watched season 2 but right now he just kinda feels like he was a guy that wasn’t ready for a child yet

I have no idea why everybody thinks this guy is so awful. My dad was a billion times worse and others had even worse than that. Adam is just dense, stubborn and loud. A lot of dads are like that. Can we stop making him seem like he’s some big bad?

It’s not a competition, more of a line. I mean, just because he’s not as bad as say Nolan, doesn’t mean he’s not abusive.

We hate him because he reminds of us the assholes we’ve met before. I’m fortunate that my father is kind and caring. He can have moments of anger when his anxiety triggers, but he’s been there for me my whole life.

You deleted the other comment so I’m gonna leave this here instead.

My father did so many things that would make Eve’s dad seem like a saint in comparison, things I can’t mention since I don’t think this sub allows personal information nor is it the correct place to do so.

Eve’s adopted father is still awful. He is still extremely misogynistic, judgemental, abusive and an overall asshole to both his daughter and wife. His behavior is NOT something that should be dismissed or ignored just because it can get worse, and we SHOULDN’T accept his way of being nor of many dads to be okay. The lesser of two evils is STILL evil.

everyone who resents him just hasn’t seen what the real bad shit is like

That statement is just so mindblowing to me. What, you think this is a competition? That there’s a VIP club for people with awful parents? Oh yeah, let’s see who’s got the better opinion after comparing eachother’s awful fathers!

Eve’s father is an unlikeable asshole. Yes a lot of real life dads are like him, yes it can get SO much worse than him. Even so, they’re still all unlikeable assholes, and their parenting should not be endorsed nor ignored; saying “well, it can get worse” is just being an enabler. Not being a bottom-of-the-earth human should be the bare minimum, not something to be praised for.

It’s like Nice Guys™ complaining that they don’t get game even though they’re soooo nice. Being nice is the bare minimum, not a high bar to reach. We should expect people to be GOOD, not just “not awful”.

There’s a whole spectrum of ways to be a piece of shit. Someone can be not as bad as your dad and still totally suck.

I’m so so sorry that you had to grow up with an abusive father. Nobody should have to deal with that. It is unfair and wrong and you deserved better.

But that guy is also abusive. Probably less than your dad, but still a horrible pos. There doesn’t have to be a victims Olympics. Your dad was a monster but so is Eve’s (and any father resembling him.)

It’s just shades of grey but it’s all bad.

I hope you find peace from your abuse and don’t repeat the cycle.

I really hated him in the comics because of how misogynistic he was and I hate the show version just as much if I’m being honest

I feel like I hate him more in the show than in the comics. Why? Because of the emotion that we get to hear in the tv show. In the comics we can dial it down in our head. But once we face the reality of hearing what he says with the tone of voice. It makes me want to hurt him.

He’s such an asshole, like he doesn’t even try to support her helping people around the world, dude would rather struggle working at Burger Mart rather than accept his daughter’s help, like how stubborn and dense can one person be?

he ain’t really wrong for the burger mart gig. in S1 Debbie is like “im not just omnimans wife, im a realtor too I just need my own accomplishments and activities” and people clapped. eves dad is doing the sane thing, he doesn’t just want a magic handout, he wants to earn things, and i don’t think he’s wrong for that

Sure, but Debbie didn’t say “we can only do things if they come from my income”. Nolan still helped out with stuff (flying her across the world for example). I feel like Eve and her dad could at least reach a compromise where she could help out with like… fixing stuff around the house that hypothetically if your unpowered kid had the skills to do they’d do it for you for free.

He’s a dense asshole who has a point but can’t communicate it without starting conflict or insulting the person. I’m sure he means well but his good intentions will always be overshadowed by how abusive he can be in insulting his daughter’s personal traits rather than trying to guide her maturely.

Just wait until the comic scene everyone is referring to lol. You’ll hate him even more. Eve’s dad got one single moment of sympathy from me during the special — when Eve’s parents thought they’d lost her baby, for just a second, I was like “okay so he’s hard about her powers partially out of fear for her safety.” He then proceeded to spend the rest of the special erasing any sympathy I had for him.

Fuck Eve’s dad. He’s such a piece of shit.

I don’t know if they’ll adapt that. I hope they do because Mark being traumatized by it is pretty hilarious. But he doesn’t seem to be quite the same type of asshole as he was in the comics.

He’s such an ass which hurts even more when he’s right, the thing about Eve not following the rules and it backfiring and almost killing people is a perfect example, like he’s right in that scene but good lord he’s such an asshole while saying it.

I can also understand him not wanting to sell the gold apple because he doesn’t want to live of his daughter’s handouts, but again he says it in the most awful way possible.

In the special we see him crying when his “actual” child died so I thought he couldn’t be THAT bad, but in a few scenes he’s already the shitty dad we know and calling her a freak.

There’s also, yanno, the biblical symbolism of the apple and the undercurrent of the scientist/atheist/godlike powers position Eve has vs. her dad’s religious/conservative/“god-fearing” position. Which Eve is pointedly blind to, having chosen “Atom Eve” as a name ignorant of the double entendre (Adam/Eve)

Its a densely woven metaphor and it’s fuxking great.

The first half of the special felt like a Tumblr post of something that definitely didn’t happen. It’s so dramatic it just doesn’t vibe with reality in my mind.

    Second half was great.

I hate him too but it makes me feel seen since it reminds me of my own dad and our relationship growing up 😂 my mom never left him either and always had excuses, I think it’s important to show that there are people like that in the world.

The issue I got from that episode is, where did Eve learn her strong moral compass from?

Like the only person who came close to understanding and accepting her experience was that babysitter. Otherwise, her friend rejected her, and her adoptive mom was just a little better than her dad. Then the scientist and biological mother understood her abilities, but the scientist was there for like a few hours out of her life, and her experience with her biological mom was for like 5 minutes during a fight for her life.

So basically she spent the vast majority of her life growing up with those two assholes - how did she learn to be better?
